Muscat Rugby Football Club (MRFC) made it two straight wins in the Gulf Conference by defeating Dubai Wasps 45-26 in Al Khuwayr last week.
MRFC got quickly into its stride and was ahead inside five minutes thanks to a try under the posts from Johan De Lange. The try was converted – also by De Lange – to give Muscat a comfortable early lead. The home team continued to press on and was awarded a penalty that was converted by De Lange.
A momentary lapse in concentration allowed the Wasps to strike back with a converted try. However, MRFC responded with two converted tries from Paul McLaren and Raphael Delhaye to give the team a 24-7 lead at home time.
The Muscat forwards continued to control the game after the break, with the defence keeping Dubai at bay. Shortly after halftime De Lange further extended the lead with another penalty.
Dubai once again replied and scored another converted try to bring the score to 27-14. Muscat then earned a bonus point by scoring its fourth try. Hard work from the home side’s forward pack allowed Dan Moloney to cross the line. De Lange converted the try.
Two further tries from Dubai Wasps narrowed the gap, but Muscat’s strength in depth showed as it responded with two more tries from Paul McLaren and Brett Van Harmaelen. De Lange was successful with both conversions and kept his 100 per cent kicking record for the day intact.
With two bonus point wins, MRFC is now top of the Gulf Conference. It will look to continue its winning streak with its first away game of the season against Kuwait on November 17.
Muscat Rugby Football Club (MRFC) outplayed Doha 45-27 in the opening match of the Gulf Conference League at the ABA ground on Friday. MRFC opened the scoring with a penalty by Johan de Lange in the fourth minute and Doha replied with a breakaway try after ten minutes.
Another penalty and a converted try by de Lange extended MRFC’s lead but Doha struck back with a penalty and a converted try to take a slender lead. De Lange then added another penalty at the stroke of half-time to take MRFC ahead.
Early on in the second half, MRFC’s Ross O’Loughlin spotted a gap in the Doha defence and broke through successfully to score a try. Doha narrowed the gap with a penalty but Dan Moloney got a try which was converted as MRFC stayed ahead in the match till the end.
MRFC’s next game is against Dubai Wasps at the same venue on October 21.
Muscat Rugby Football Club (MRFC) crushed HMS St Albans 28-11 in a friendly match that was played at the ABA ground on Wednesday.
The game started slowly but MRFC steadily took control of the proceedings. Dan Moloney opened the scoring ten minutes into play, touching down a pushover try. Johan de Lange added the conversion.
MRFC briefly relaxed as HMS St Albans responded with a try from its left winger. The home team then worked its way up-field and scored again from a pushover try with Dom Winfield logging the points while De Lange converted.
As the game went into second-half, uncontested scrums came into play, with HMS St Albans taking more possession. However, Winfield capitalised on a weak defence to score his second try and stretch the lead for MRFC. Winfield won the Man-of-the-Match award.
MRFC’s next game is against Doha at the same venue on October 14.

The club moves into its 42nd year of existence in 2012-13 season in good shape.
Pre-season training has gone well and a good win last week against HMS Sutherland augurs well for the new season. Playing numbers are good, with 30+ at training and we are looking forward to the competitive season with some anticipation. Steve Little, John Lovelace Penny, Mark Mason and ‘Joe’ Fulton Morrow are doing a splendid job in getting the squad in shape and keeping them that way.
The club has seen much change of fortune over the years, but a constant has always been a friendly welcoming club, that enjoys its rugby. We continue to use the Habana Bar in the Grand Hyatt as ‘home’ for post-match entertainment and other events. It has been recently refurbished and is a great place to meet up socially. We are very grateful to Christoph and the staff there who have made us very welcome in the Habana and we hope our good relationship continues.
A huge thank you also to DHL, I2Offshore, Aggreko, AIL and Lufkin who provided sponsorship last season. We hope that they will continue in the new season and are glad to welcome Stomo on board for 2012-13. We welcome all our sponsors’ involvement in Muscat RFC and hope that they and we enjoy the experience.
We have entered three teams in the Dubai 7s for this year. All teams hope to go one step further than last year and bring home some silver.
We are getting good numbers for the Vets for Touch on Tuesdays at 8pm and hope to continue with that during the season.
There is a lot lined up both on the playing and non-playing side so keep eyes and ears open for things coming along.
